This year saw a record number of entries (266 in total!) for the Regiostars Award. Only five participants from across Europe were selected as winners by the expert jury. MONOCAB received the award in the ‘A Connected Europe’ category.
The EU-funded project from North Rhine-Westphalia, led by the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences, is investigating the use of the Monocab vehicle. The Monocab is an innovative monorail vehicle that drives autonomously. This allows old, disused railways to be put back into service, for example in rural areas in the border region, without the need for additional personnel. The Monocab can accommodate 4 to 6 people and, as the vehicle only needs one rail, two Monocabs can pass each other on a single track.
In recent years, a smaller sub-project, ‘MONOCAB Rhine-Waal’, led by the Hochschule Rhein-Waal, has investigated whether potential travellers are actually willing to use the monocab. To investigate this, an excursion to Ostwestfalen-Lippe was organised last May, where the monocab was demonstrated. This project contributes to sustainable mobility in the Euregio Rhine-Waal and is supported by funds from the Small Projects Fund of Interreg Deutschland-Nederland.
