On 12 May 2026, Heidi de Ruiter, Deputy director of the Rhine-Waal Euregio, successfully defended her thesis, “Dichtbij of ver weg? Het buurland in Nederlandse en Duitse regionale dagbladen”, and was awarded a PhD by Radboud University.
The thesis examined the way in which Dutch and German regional media report on the neighbouring country and what this reveals about proximity, distance and cross-border perceptions.
