Floods Bring Us Together: Our Region, Our Future

The Small Projects Fund under the Interreg VI Germany-Netherlands programme is once again supporting a cross-border initiative: on 6 March 2026, the project ‘Hochwasser verbindet: unsere Region, unsere Zukunft’ was officially approved. The occasion marks the centenary of the great Rhine flood of 1926.

Through lectures, exhibitions, cycle tours and project and theme weeks for schoolchildren, the project addresses flood protection, climate change and regional history. An exhibition will take place from 31 May to 14 June inclusive at the village community centre “de Spieker” in Spijk. The “Floods” exhibition is also part of the “Hochwasser verbindet: unsere Region, unsere Zukunft” project and has previously been on display in Pannerden, Zevenaar, Tuindorp, Herwen and Emmerich.

The aim is to bring people from Germany and the Netherlands together and, in particular, to raise awareness among young people of future challenges in the fields of water and climate. The project is supported by various German and Dutch partner organisations from the fields of history, education and water management.

If you are interested in funding opportunities in the border region, you can find further information at https://deutschland-nederland.eu/de/kleinprojektefonds/. Further information on the exhibition can be found at: Opening of the 1926 Flood Exhibition in Spijk – Zevenaar Post
