Study shows opportunities for cycling links to Germany

An extensive survey explored possible cycling routes in the Emmerich, Zevenaar and Doetinchem triangle.

The study meticulously shows all opportunities, bottlenecks, choices and improvements on existing and future cycling routes between the three municipalities. For instance, the facilities and safety along these routes were examined on existing and potential routes, and several linking opportunities were identified for municipal cycling connections that could connect to this main network for cyclists.

Sustainable travel between the Netherlands and Germany

Fast bicycle connections are on the rise, stimulating sustainable travel, even commuting by bicycle. Sustainable travel is important to travel from A to B as much as possible without CO2 emissions and without using fossil fuels. In the coming period, the contents of the research report will be discussed administratively. As a result, concrete proposals will be developed to realise improvements on these bicycle connections.

Study realised thanks to Interreg funds

The Euregio Rhine-Waal has characterised the Emmerich-Doetinchem-Zevenaar triangular link as a major potentially promising project in their Euregional Mobility Plan. In 2023, the Achterhoek Region, as lead partner, jointly launched an exploratory study on the fast bicycle link with several partners, also at the request of the Achterhoek Council. A joint application was then submitted to the small projects fund in the Interreg VI programme Deutschland-Nederland. The project ‘Verkeersonderzoek grensoverschrijdende snelle fietsverbinding Zevenaar - Doetinchem - Emmerich’ is made possible by the Interreg Programme Deutschland-Nederland with its programme partners and co-financed by the European Union (EU). With this awarded grant and contributions from partners, this study was carried out.
