How can the transition to more sustainable and inclusive mobility in rural areas be achieved? What role do science, politics, administration – and, in particular, citizens – play in this? Can new, innovative approaches such as MONOCAB provide decisive impetus in this regard?
The MONOCAB is an autonomous rail vehicle developed under the direction of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences (TH OWL). It aims to create customisable mobility services for rural areas and complement traditional public transport. The potential of this new technology has also been recognised in the Lower Rhine region. On 23 May 2025, a group of interested citizens from Kleve and the Netherlands set off for the MONOCAB test track in Extertal as part of a university project. This smaller sub-project, ‘MONOCAB Rhein-Waal’, led by Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, is investigating whether potential passengers would use this innovative means of transport. This project promotes sustainable mobility in the Euregio Rhine-Waal and is made possible by the small projects fund of the Interreg programme Deutschland-Nederland.
The event will take place from 10:00 to 17:00 in Kleve and will be streamed live. Participation is free of charge. https://www.hochschule-rhein-waal.de/de/fakultaeten/gesellschaft-und-oekonomie/forschung/forschungsprojekte/monocab-rijn-waal/symposium
